These are typical of the buildings in St Petersburg. The entire historic centre is a Unesco world heritage site. Downtown there are more modern buildings going up but they don't have the character of these historic buildings. The city plan was based on Amsterdam, with straight prospects/avenues radiating out from the centre, the Admiralty shipyard, and criss-crossed by canals.
